Hi, I’m Daphne Carlisle

Recipe developer, cooking enthusiast, and your guide to becoming fluent in the kitchen

Daphne Carlisle Profile

From Home Cook to Recipe Creator

My journey with food started in my grandmother’s kitchen in Charleston, where I learned that cooking isn’t just about following recipes; It’s about creating memories, bringing people together, and nourishing both body and soul.

After years of experimenting in my own kitchen and sharing recipes with friends and family, I decided to create Fluent Recipes, a place where home cooks of all skill levels can learn, grow, and become truly fluent in the art of cooking.

Today, I spend my days developing recipes that are approachable yet impressive, testing them until they’re perfect, and sharing them with you through this platform I’ve built with love.

My Cooking Philosophy

These principles guide everything I create and share

🌿

Fresh & Simple

💡

Clear Instructions

Every recipe includes detailed steps and helpful tips so you always know exactly what to do next.

Tested & Reliable

I test each recipe multiple times to ensure it works perfectly before sharing it with you.

My Story

Growing up in Charleston, South Carolina, I was surrounded by incredible food culture. My grandmother’s Sunday dinners were legendary, her shrimp and grits, her pecan pie, her perfectly fried chicken. But what I remember most wasn’t just the food itself, but the way it brought everyone together.

After college, I moved to New York City to pursue a career in marketing, but I found myself spending more time planning elaborate dinner parties for friends than focusing on my nine-to-five. Those gatherings became the highlight of my week, the planning, the cooking, the joy of seeing people enjoy something I’d created.

In 2020, like many people, I found myself with extra time at home. I started documenting my recipes, photographing my dishes, and sharing them with a small online community. The response was overwhelming. People loved the approachable style, the clear instructions, and most importantly, the fact that the recipes actually worked.

That’s how Fluent Recipes was born. Today, I work full-time creating and testing recipes, connecting with home cooks around the world, and continuing my grandmother’s legacy of bringing people together through food. Every recipe I share carries a piece of her wisdom: cook with love, keep it simple, and never underestimate the power of a good meal.

Beyond The Kitchen

When I’m not developing recipes or testing new dishes, you can find me exploring farmers markets for seasonal inspiration, reading cookbooks cover to cover (my collection has reached embarrassing proportions), or hosting dinner parties for friends who graciously serve as my taste-testers.

I’m a firm believer that cooking should be joyful, not stressful. My kitchen is always a little messy, music is always playing, and there’s usually a glass of wine within reach. That’s the spirit I try to bring to every recipe I create approachable, enjoyable, and real.

I share my home in Brooklyn with my husband Alex, our rescue dog Basil (yes, named after the herb), and far too many kitchen gadgets. We dream of one day opening a small cooking school where we can teach others the joy of becoming fluent in their own kitchens.
